What Is Myofascial Release Therapy?
The myofascial release procedure is a hands-on technique used to treat pain and restricted motion in soft tissues. It can help to relax contracted muscles, increase circulation and lymphatic drainage, and stimulate the stretch reflex of muscles and overlying fascia.
What Is Fascia?
Fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body, including every muscle and every fiber within each muscle. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and fascia that surround it become short and tight.
This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain, tightness, and sensitivity in other areas of the body. Myofascial release treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia.
The Myofascial Process
The physical therapist will locate the area(s) of tightness and apply a light stretch to the tight area. He will wait for the tissue to relax and then increase the stretch. The process is repeated until the tightness reduces and the area relaxes.
The process is very gentle and relaxing. The areas of tightness are also known as trigger points, and the size and sensitivity of these sore spots will decrease over time with ongoing treatments.
